YUMMY MUMMY CONTEST Check this out over at The YummyMummy Club: This may seem like a giveaway for the kids, but this prize is all about you. The YummyMummyClub.ca knows how hard it is for mummies to find time for themselves, especially during summer vacation. So we’re giving away a chance to send your kid to camp. And while your child is off at camp, you can indulge in some time to yourself and make everything about you…at least for two weeks. Prize value - $1,000. Having time to yourself - priceless. 'Cuz mummies deserve to play too! Yummy Rules and Regs: Also, be sure to check out Robyn Hochglaube's article at YummyMummy Club about "Why Moms Need Camp". |

ROBYN READS... 'Connected Parenting' by Jennifer Kolari I am really excited to introduce this new section of our newsletter! As an avid reader, a parent of three, and a camp director to hundreds, I think that introducing you to some of my favorite parenting and resource books would be a great fit! To kick off my bi-monthly book review I have chosen Connected Parenting by Jennifer Kolari – a local social worker and family and child therapist with eye opening techniques that really do connect you to your child. I first learned about Jennifer at our annual Ontario Camps Association conference. She offered a keynote address that discussed the idea of 'mirroring'. I was so intrigued by the concept I ran out to the bookstore to pick up a copy of her recently released book, Connected Parenting. A quick synopsis of her theory of 'mirroring' asks that we really hear what the person is saying to us, and respond in a way that is appropriate. That we offer a response that indicates to the other person "yes, I hear you, and I understand you" even if you don’t necessarily agree. She explains it clearly in her book by stating that when you are trying to explain something, a feeling or an incident, to another person and that person does not respond to you in the way that you had hoped or expected, you feel disappointed, she goes on to describe the disappointment as feeling a "drop" in the pit of your stomach. Mirroring, to your child, spouse or friend, is your way of letting them know you are not going to drop them. In Jennifer's book she offers example after example of how adults do not give enough value to what our children are telling us. She shares wonderful analogies throughout to really help us understand her message. She offers techniques that can be used on spouses, friends and less challenging children too! Since picking up this book, I have often caught myself thinking about how I am reacting in any situation. Sometimes I get the mirroring act down perfect, and other times I just fail outright. But when I get it, its awesome, and yes, it really works! I highly recommend a trip to the bookstore on this one! |
