JULY 2010 - WEEK 1

SENIORS, GRADS, & ALUMNI PREPARE FOR THE STAGE

So far the auditions for the Sound of Music have been quite fun and have been running smoothly. We think it's very good because everyone is included. If someone didn't receive a part, they can still sing in the chorus. Dave is very easygoing. If there's a rehearsal but you want to miss it to go to a favourite activity, Dave is very accommodating. He motivates us and encourages us to memorize our lines. The dances are very easy to learn and we have lots of fun doing them while getting exercise! With all of the upcoming rehearsals, we think that the show is going to be a blast! We hope you enjoy the show.

UNIT BLOGS AND PHOTO GALLERY

The blogs are a great way for families to stay updated on what is going on at each unit throughout the week. This week the Beavers blogged to parents about our movie theme day and our lost and found program. The Buffaloes talked about their campers great energy and their Toy Story themed unit day while the Eagles promoted Avatar Blue. Bears families learned about their amazing Lost and Found fashion show, and the Seniors and Grads blogged about keeping cool at the pool. Click here to check out the blogs.

Another great way to keep up with what's going on at camp is by checking out the photo gallery. Updated daily, there are pictures of Traditional Camp, All-Star, MyCAMP, and Cedar Creek. To see the photos just click here.

CHANGE FOR CHANGE

On Thursday, July 15th take the opportunity to help send a child to camp as well as support one of our own campers, Aaron Maretsky, with his charity Aaron's Apple. Aaron recently founded a new charity supporting families who cannot afford drug costs associated with their child's illness. Aaron was inspired last year by the Camp Green Acres Change for Change program promoting "Kids helping Kids" and his own family's experience when he was diagnosed with Chron's Disease. Our Change for Change is also a charity initiative to raise money for the organization Kids in Camp. The goal of Kids in Camp is to help families, who otherwise wouldn't be able, to send their child to camp. Change jars will be placed in all the buses. We encourage parents to help support the cause and to give any spare change to their child to bring to camp. Let's see which bus can raise the most money!

THURSDAY THEME DAYS

This Thursday Green Acres was transformed from a camp filled with regular kids to a camp filled with movie stars! Everywhere we looked we saw famous faces. Superman was playing with Snow White, Buzz Lightyear and Woody from Toy Story were interacting with the Na'vi's from Avatar, and even the Grinch came to visit. Each unit participated in a Unit Day filled with A Day at the Movies themed activities. The Seniors went on Jack Sparrow's treasure hunt while Buffaloes were immersed into the world of Toy Story.

Next week our theme is Western Hoedown. We can't wait to see all the campers dressed like cowboys and cowgirls!

FRIDAY'S SPIRIT RALLIES

Filled with singing, dancing, and challenges, spirit rallies are a highlight to our Friday program. All campers divide into three teams; Aqua Force is the blue team, Freeze Force is red, and Hypnotic Force is yellow. The juniors and seniors participated in similar challenges involving our favourite maneuver- the crab walk! We loved all the enthusiasm and can't wait for next week's spirit rally!

LTP CAMPING TRIP

On the first day of camp we arrived with smiles on our faces, excited for the two night camping trip. We got on a bus and drove to Sibbald's Point. We set up tents, went to the lake, and also made our own pizza rolls for dinner. We spent a lot of time sitting by the campfire, eating s'mores and bonding. Our second day there was extremely hot so we spent the majority of the morning swimming. We all enjoyed spending time cooling off with our new BFFs. We had a great time on our trip, making memories and creating new longlasting friendships. However, we are all happy to be back at camp!

HEALTH TIP OF THE WEEK

The health center at camp is open to staff and campers for any injury whether it's big or small! Our awesome nurses, Michelle, Jenn, and Audrey are full of great advice and this week they are recommending everyone at camp stay hydrated! If you wait until you feel thirsty it means that your body is already dehydrated so the message is....make sure to drink water at least every half hour.

SPECIALTY CORNER: Recording Studio

Guess which activity involves hearing "We Will Rock You" four times a day? If you haven't already guessed, it's Recording! The studio is filled with campers eager to be rock stars. From Queen to Lion King, and many other songs in between, it's been a lot of fun to record other artists' work. Campers have been able to choose one favourite song out of 500 tunes in the library. We can't wait to see what songs campers will choose next time. Can't wait to see you Monday when a complete new library of tunes will be waiting for you! Recording is the place to be at camp (of course!).
