JULY 2010 - WEEK 3

AN INSIDE LOOK AT THE SENIORS BOB TRIP

This week Seniors cabins 71 and 72 have returned from their BOB trip at Camp Wahanowin. They spent a great week together participating in a ton of water activities to keep cool from the hot sun. They went tubing and waterskiing and Eden from cabin 71 claimed that the water trampoline was awesome because she got to do it with her friend Jamie. Amanda and Sam, also from cabin 71, had an absolute ball on the trapeeze and took turns ziplinging. The campers got to sleep on bunk beds for the week and said they loved being able to spend extra time with their friends, despite the snoring! Luckily, for anyone who lost sleep, they could participate in the contest "Minute To Win It" which consists of a series of competitions with the grand prize of extra pillow time in the morning! Finally, some of the lucky Seniors who had friends or family at Camp Wahanowin had the opportunity to visit with them. Overall, they had a fantastic week but we are happy to have our seniors back at camp with us!

WEB DESIGN AT MYCAMP

This week the MyCAMP program here at Green Acres is giving the campers the opportunity to create their own websites! In small groups, campers spent the whole week on mac laptop computers woking on their designs. The website can be on anything they want but specialists promote adding a personal touch by writing a blog or adding pictures. The best part is... when the website is done, it gets burned onto discs so each group member can take it home!

SPECIALTY CORNER: Gymnastics

This week at gymnastics everybody showed their skills in a relay obstacle course. This tricky course tested balance, endurance, creativity, strength, and courage through different elements. The campers had to walk the balance beam, climb the ladders, jump on the trampoline, and more! We had an absolutely fantastic time. Great job everybody!

WORLD CUP SOCCER

On Wednesday everyone from Beavers to Grads participated in our World Cup Soccer tournament. It was a fantastic day! Campers were full of spirit as they dressed up in their team colours, painted their faces, and made giant team flags! The morning began with an opening ceremony where everyone sang "O Canada" and then the games began! Our LTPs did a fantastic job acting as referees for all the games and our amazing DJs, Mitchy B and 2legit, from Superfly Entertainment kept everyone up-to-date with game times as well as kept up the spirit with loud music, conga lines, dances contests, and t-shirt giveaways. All our campers did an amazing job and a big congratulations to everyone for their super team work. Although everyone is a winner, the Bronze cup went to team Uruguay, Ghana won the silver and our big gold cup winners were GREECE! Congratulations to everyone for showing such great team spirit and sportsmanship on the field!

FAMILY NIGHT

This past Wednesday we welcomed all the families to join us here at Green Acres for family night. We had a great time meeting all of our camper's parents as well as allowing them to participate in their child's daily activities. There were fruit kebabs at cooking, learning the camp moves at dance, and a ton of activity at the waterslides! When the activities were over and the pizza dinner had been eaten, everyone gathered together to experience one of our amazing spirit rallies hosted by Superfly Entertainment. There was also an awesome show put on by our very own Glee club and a speech about a charity created by Green Acres camper Aaron Maresky called Aaron's Apple. Thank you to all the families who came out and helped make it an amazing evening. We can't wait to see you back at camp on Wednesday, August 11 for our next family night and carnival!

HEALTH TIP OF THE WEEK

This week Michelle, Jenn, and Audrey are reminding all parents, campers, and staff to remember their sunscreen! Sunscreen is very important in protecting our skin from the suns harmful rays. Our nurses recommend Sun Protection Factor (SPF) 30, anything greater won't make much difference. Reapply sunscreen, especially after swimming and if it gets in your eyes, rinse it out for five minutes. Remember that the suns rays are the strongest between 11am and 4pm, so try and seek shade under trees or inside!

VLOGGING: YOUR DAILY GLIMPSE INTO CAMP LIFE

For summer of 2010, Darren Greenspoon, the Director of All-Star & MyCAMP, had an idea. Over the past few summers he had been Blogging regularly, but he wanted to take the experience to the next level. Video seemed like a natural progression and Video Blogging aka ‘Vlogging’ was born! As the Vlogger, my goal is to capture camp and all its highlights so that at the end of the day, when campers step off the bus, they could relive those moments with family and friends! My mornings are filled with filming, and my afternoons with capturing, editing, exporting, converting, and uploading! The response to Vlogging has been great so far; I am extremely appreciative of all comments that have been emailed in! If you haven’t checked out Vlogging yet, click here!
