JULY 2010 - Week 4

SO LONG, FAREWELL...

Our first month of camp is over and we are so sad to say goodbye to those of you who are leaving! We had a fantastic month filled with overnights, extended nights, western hoedown, 80's day, superhero day, spirit rallies, crazy hair day, camp day kickoffs, and more! We hope that all of you enjoy the rest of your summer and we cannot wait to see you back at camp on Wednesday August 11th for our awesome carnival! For those of you who are interested in returning to Green Acres, we have spots available during the month of August. Please contact the camp office for more information about registering. We wish all of you a very successful school year and can't wait to continue the fun in Summer 2011!

BAYCREST COMES TO VISIT

On Tuesday, the seniors from Baycrest came to visit the LTPs here at Green Acres. They came for several hours of entertainment, craft, food, and fun! Over a delicious lunch the seniors shared stories about their families and interests. One man even sang and danced for everyone! After lunch, there was a tractor ride around the camp grounds. For the people that preferred crafts, they got to make their own stainglass plates. It was a great afternoon and LTPs Natalie and Alicia were sad to say goodbye to their new friends. "We would love to be able to spend more time with them," they said.

PRINCESS AND THE FROG

For the past two weeks, the Bears and Eagles have been working so hard to perfect their performance for the play "The Princess and the Frog." All the practices and time spent paid off when they debuted the show on Thursday. Campers and staff loved all the amazing singing and dancing that went on throughout the hour. We were so impressed with how everyone knew their lines and cues so well! Great job to David who directed the show and to all the campers who were involved! We can't wait to see the next two plays in August!

COME ONE, COME ALL

Our family nights are known for giving parents and siblings a glimpse into our summers at Camp Green Acres. Special this August, we want to share the energy and excitement of our GREAT camp with EVERYONE!

Please invite friends, neighbours and of course family to come and experience our ever popular family night this summer. On Wednesday, August 11th come one, come all to the Green Acres Carnival! Bouncers, games, dancing and more can be enjoyed from 6-8PM. As always the fun is free and Counselors, Swim Staff, and Unit Heads will be available for you to meet.

Part of our character education program is helping those who are less fortunate than us. At Carnival we will be having a raffle to benefit our Change for Change charities; Aaron's Apple and Kids In Camp. If you or your business would like to support our Change for Change program by donating an item for our raffle please call Jon at 905-887-1400.

Details can be found online here and will be emailed out the week of the event. We hope to see you there!

CAMPABANAPALOOZA

On Friday, the whole camp gathered for Campabanapalooza! Our theme for the event was Caribbean and each unit had their own activity which other campers got to visit! The Eagles created "The Eagle Egg Raid", the Seniors made their own carnival, and the Buffaloes had fun with water. As the day came to an end, everyone came together for a parade where all the units showed off their amazing floats. It was a great way to end the first month and everybody had a fantastic time.

ALL-STAR SURVIVOR

Based on the popular reality show, All-Star has adapted the show into their daily schedule. Every morning the staff competes in different events that test their endurance, strength, and eating abilities! The most popular contests to date have been the hot dog eating and ice cream eating contests. This monthly contest began with six teams, which shrank down to two teams, which has now become an individual challenge as July is nearing the end. Everyday the campers get to vote off a staff member of their choice. Run by Lee and Andrew, this contest allows the winner the pride of being All-Star's best survivor! Next month the games will start all over again. It will be tougher and even more exciting, so get ready!

HEALTH TIP OF THE WEEK

This week our nurses want to discuss the benefits of a good nights sleep! It is recommended that they receive between 7-8 hours of sleep per night. Not only does this keep them energized for the following day, but a full nights sleep can keep their heart healthy and strong, boost their immune system, helps control body weight, and helps them learn new skills. A lack of sleep can lead to a weakened immune system which makes us more susceptible to getting sick. Sleep is extremely important for children in order to grow, develop, and function. Finally, a good night sleep means resting for a sufficient amount of uninterrupted time.

WE LOVE OUR BUSES

One of our favourite parts of each day is the bus ride to and from camp. Each animal named bus is filled with decorations, cheering, and happy campers! Bus activities are a big part of the transportation fun and this week our bus theme has been superheros! Campers have the option of dressing up and creating their very own comic strip about their superhero bus. Sophie from the Chimpanzee bus said that she loves her bus because "our bus captains are fun and we get to sing karaoke." Alex loves the Rooster bus because "the cheers are creative." The Whale bus is awesome for Ethan because he gets to spend time with all of his friends. Not only do our campers love the bus but so do our staff! Bus captain Hayli always has a great time on the Shark bus by entertaining the kids.
