AUGUST 2010 - WEEK 8

SEE YOU NEXT SUMMER!

It is the end of week 8 and the end of summer! We are so sad to say goodbye but want to thank everyone for an absolutely amazing summer! Our theater performances, spirit rallies, Thursday theme days, and of course, all the big smiles have made this summer one of the best yet! Parents, remember that there are still programs available in week 9 so please contact the camp office if you are interested in registering your child. Additionally, keep a look out for your returning camper discount forms which have been mailed out. If you have not received one, contact the camp office before September 15, 2010. Finally, we hope to see all of you back at Green Acres on Sunday, October 17 for our Pumpkin Day. Have a great school year and see you all next summer!

LOONEY TUNES

Our future broadway stars ended the summer with a bang! The final play was performed by the Bears and Eagles on Thursday. Looney Tunes was a long anticipated show and definitely exceeded expectations. The catchy songs were stuck in our heads all day, not that we're complaining! A fabulous job to everyone involved and we are so excited to see our rising stars on stage again next summer.

MyCAMP

This summer heat wave has increase the popularity of MyCAMP's water activities. Waterpolo and synchronized swimming have been giving the campers the ability to learn new skills and try somthing new.
Synchro has allowed the campers to work on there team building skills while jamming to Miley Cyrus "Party in the USA" and Michael Jackson's "Thiller". These popular songs allow for the campers to enjoy the pool water while learning new skills from hand stands to lifts. While Syncro is polishing up there dance moves, water polo campers test there athletic ability and hand eye coordination. Both activities are unique to MyCAMP and the campers love them!

TOURNAMENT OF KNIGHTS

Opening ceremonies for our last amazing camp event began on Wednesday afternoon. The Tournaments of Knights is an awesome three day event in which campers joined the Knights of Windsor, Perciville, and Lancelot to help bring Princess Amira home from an island way across the 7 seas. The task force had to prepare to fight the pirates along the way and prepared by spending their days doing target practice, making statues, building a pirate ship, dressing up, dancing, and of course, cheering LOUDLY! King Kevin and Queen Robyn were thrilled to have their daughter home safe!

ALL-STAR

Wow! Another amazing summer has come and gone here at All-Star. This summer we really "hit it out of the park!" The incredible sports here at All-Star were once again a "slam dunk" for our campers. They all "flipped" for our "Rookie of the Year" sport, Extreme Biking. The extended nights and Friday parties were all "overhead smashes" and enjoyed by all campers and staff. The morning Survivor challenges were always intense and exhilerating, and always got a huge roar from the "gallery." Thank you to all the campers who made the summer of 2010 the best ever! See you all next year!

- Katie Crockett, All-Star

FREE TO BE YOU AND ME

This Friday our awesome staff performed the play "Free To Be You and Me" for all of the campers. Based off of the 1970's afterschool special, this play has an important message: anybody can do anything. With a few lyrical changes, the songs became more updated as one even mentioned the ever popular Silly Bandz fad. All the campers had a great time and a fabulous job to the performers!

HEALTH TIP OF THE WEEK

As all of our campers head off to school Michelle, Jenn, and Audrey want to remind parents about the importance of a proper backpack. A proper bag should have two thick straps, a padded back, and a belt. The thick straps prevent neck and shoulder injuries while thinner straps tend to pinch the nerves in the shoulders. The padded back and the belt help to support the back and abdominal muscles. A proper backpack prevents muscle and joint strain and it helps with posture over the years. We do not recommend one strap bags, such as tote bags, as it puts too much weight on one shoulder when the weight of the bag should be evenly distributed. If you are not sure if the bag is too heavy, remember that the weight of the pack should be approximately 10-15% of the childs body weight.

SPECIALTY CORNER: Cooking

What a summer this has been! The kitchen was filled to the brim with aspiring young chefs; ready with willing hands and growling tummies. Together, we have measured, mixed, whisked, crushed, sprinkled, chopped, baked, and eaten our way through a scrumptious array of recipes. From "Little Lamb Cupcakes" to "Cheesy Pizza Twists" to "Donut Muffins", it has been quite the journey. For our final week we made "Cheesy Nachos" with sour cream and salsa... transforming the ordinary tortilla into something special. Hand-torn and baked until crisp, then layered with cheddar cheese, the children were amazed, and ready to devour their final creation the minute the timer rang! While those mouth-watering treats were in the over, we continued on with an exciting round of "Food Group Bingo", and each cabin had a chance to win our "Smartie Guessing Jar." As always, the campers were excited to take home andother recipe to share. So strap on those aprons, preheat those ovens, and be prepared to continue this kitchen adventure at home together!
